I work in an electronical design office. We use a little logical analyzer's clips for measurements - I grabbed two for myself - these are clips for grabbing the chip legs - and I've found these are very convenient for modeling. I saw them in some shops here and I'm sure you can also find them in "Radio Shack" type of electronics supply shops.

 If you push the back button, it opens  and allows you to hold a small parts. 
Now you are ready to paint this.  
After the painting, you also may place this into plasticine for drying. 

 

I've found that these clips are much more suitable for small parts than the "alligator" clips.
