1/144 Academy F-16A conversion to RSAF F-16C Black Knights

The kit is an Academy F-16A (probably a Block 10 due to the small horizontal stabs provided). The RSAF Black Knights aerobatic team made their return in 2014 with a new design scheme in the Singapore Airshow that year, after a hiatus in 2008 flying the F-16Cs in the older scheme. Two jets from the team took part in the 12th Australian International Airshow and Aerospace and Defence Exposition held in Avalon Airport, Victoria. They will take to the sky in this year’s National Day Jubilee celebration with their aerial display. More significantly, they will fly in a special 5-stars formation as a tribute to honour the late founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew who passed away on 23 March this year.

The following enhancements were made for the conversion:-

  • Discard the original canopy and scratch-built one from acrylic rod. Scratch-build a pilot for in-flight display.

  • Improve the intake area, fuselage and air brakes

  • Added the total pressure probe, AOA probes, strobe lights, bird cutter IFF blades and radio antennas.

  • Removed the original launcher and scratch-built a new launcher to look close to a LAU7 as used on the Black Knights.

  • Centerline tank was from a Revell kit but added scratch-built smoke pipe using copper wire.

The colour scheme is gloss red and white using basic Tamiya/Mr Hobby acrylics. Decals and stencils were self-made, depicting Black Knight Leader. Two coats of Future were applied to render a smoother finish bigger footprint of the crescent and 5-stars centerpiece. No weathering was applied. Used cotton wool to simulate the smoke trail created by the smoke pipe.

A Happy 50th Birthday to Singapore.  Majulah Singapura!  Enjoy the photos.
