Hi everyone,

The 1/72 scale FineMolds Star Wars Millennium Falcon doesn’t need any introduction anymore, nor does the original item from the Star Wars movies.

Being a great model kit with a high-end quality of detailing, the model was great fun to build and finish. It took me approximately 5 months to complete, but the result is satisfactory.

After a pretty straightforward and easy assembling phase, the finishing was basically done by the following subsequent modelling steps:

  • base primer (grey primer / Vallejo primer) and 3 base coat (different shades of light grey / Vallejo)

  • pre-shading (black, toned down with 5% grey / vallejo)

  • detail painting (red, white, yellow, black & dark grey surfaces / Tamiya acrylics or Humbrol enamel)

  • gloss varnish (protection of previous base paint phases before adding decals)

  • decals

  • semi-matt varnish (protection of decals before moving on with next paint phases)

  • 7 filters (mainly white, grey tones, 1st worn out down-toning with sand and beige tones / all filters 5% paint, Vallejo acrylics)

  • 3 washes (dark grey, black, sand / Winsor&Newton oil colors <5% paint, rest W&N Sansodor turpentine – love the smell though but unfortunately rather unhealthy)

  • discoloration technique (brushing a limited surface with only clear W&N Sansodor turpentine, followed by dipping spots of oil paint (plain on a small brush, no thinner or anything added), followed by wiping and spreading the spots over the rest of the turpentine’d’ surface / great effect after full drying)

  • weathering with 14 different colours (mainly drybrushing / Humbrol enamel)

  • detail shading

  • matt varnish

  • photography

Most fun came from the actual fine-detailing of specific areas like the cockpit and the gangway to the center of the ship, the battle damage areas, the visible engines and piping, the rear exhausts and propulsion area, the rotating guns on top and below, etc... . Enjoy the detail images below.
