Sikorsky CH-34A / S-58 “Choctaw”
c/n 58340 / 07
Israel Air Force, 124 Squadron “The Rolling Sword”
Israel, 1968
The poor engine performance shown by the Sikorsky S-55 prompted the IAF to look for a replacement. On February 13th 1958 the first pair arrived in Israel, followed by another helicopter in March. At the outbreak of the Six Days War on June 5th 1967 the "Rolling Sword" squadron had 28 S-58s in its inventory. The helicopters begun the war evacuating pilots downed during operation "Moked". The S-58 continued to fly combat missions after the end of the Six Days War, mainly against Palestinians infiltrating Israel or against their bases in Jordan. On March 21st 1968 the operation "Tofet" (inferno) against Jordanian, was the last operation of the S-58 as it was reitred shortly later, replaced by the Agusta Bell
AB-205 and Aerospatiale "Super Frelon".
