1/72 Hasegawa Macchi Mc 202

by Michel Jacqmain

--------------------

I've always wanted to build a Macchi because I think it's an elegant aircraft.  But I was intimidated by the camouflage schemes of WWII Italian aircraft.  And indeed painting the smoke rings was hard to do.  The model was first painted olive green.  Then the rings were cut out in Tamiya masking tape with a very sharp knife.  After that the rings were pasted on the aircraft. Then the aircraft was oversprayed in sandy brown. After removing the rings the colours of the aircraft were faded with white artist oil paint.  Panel lines where treated with a mix of burned sienna, burned umber and black oil paints.  To simulate the dust on the aircraft I used some chalk pastel.

The model was made straight from the box.

The Macchi Mc. 202 Folgore (lightning) was the result of Italian design combined with a German engine, the Daimler Benz DB601 (later build under licence by Alfa Romeo).  This mix made the Mc. 202 a serious opponent  for the P-40's, Hurricanes and even Spitfires and Mustangs.

Arrivederci.
