27.06.1966 this airplane crashed during an accident, pilot was rescued. At that time VA-212 Rampant Raiders flew from aboard the CV-19 USS Hancock, while cruising in the Gulf of Tonkin, 50 years ago better known as Yankee Station.

If you are interested in how it was at that time to be a naval aviator, Stephen R. Gray’s book is highly recommended. He did not fly this particular airplane, he became a squadron mate a tour later.

Not only had the Skyhawk shown air wing number 222, it was also S/N 150000 of the US Navy. Counting of bureau numbers started for the 5th time during WW II (1940), the number 1 being a Curtiss SB2C-1 Helldiver. The system is still in use, with the latest 168314 (F-35B … therefore seems to include the Marines ;-).

Thank you and have fun!
