1/72 XB-70 and launching an X-15

Silly Week 2010

For Silly Week, here's my 'What-if".

I ran across a sketch, done in the 1960's, of an XB-70 launching an X-15 in the book Hypersonic. The AMT/Ertl 1/72 XB-70 kit is a notoriously poor fitting kit ... but, for me, that's the fun of building something like this. The X-15 is the 1/72 Revell kit and I had to create delta-wings for it. I also modified the engine nozzle and reworked the ID number to be like the 'artist's concept' in the book. The cradle the X-15 launches from, was based on the book's sketch and made from Milliput and styrene.

The X-15 kit was pretty easy to build and paint ...  and the XB-70 was ... well, a challenge. However, it turned out very nicely. You can see an online build of it here on ARC in the 'In progress' builds

Thanx Steve, for all the effort you put into maintaining this site.
