Happy Hanukkah - the Festival of Lights |
|
Bahrain
National Day Kazakhstan
National Day |
|
|
Today is the first day of
Hanukkah. Hanukkah is very special Jewish holiday that includes
traditions such as eating foods fried in oil, giving gifts to children,
parties and festive events. It is a time for family and friends to
draw close and share special memories. The highlight of this 8 day
festival is the lighting of a candle on the "menorah" or a
"hanukkiah" each day during the 8 days of Hanukkah
to remember the victory
by the Maccabees (led by Judah) over the Hellenistic Syrians in a revolt
that took place around 165 BCE. The victory in itself was considered
a miracle, but once the Temple Mount in Jerusalem had been reclaimed, the
Temple had to be rededicated. According to legend, only one jar of
sacramental oil was found, enough for one day. Miraculously, the oil
burned for eight days, thus the eight days of Hanukkah. |
I'd like to wish
all our Jewish ARC'ers a very happy Hanukkah!!! Steve B
