Aero L-39 and L-59 Albatros

#72019  1/72 scale Decal sheet

Review by Steve Bamford (ARC Staff)

This decal sheet comes in 1/72 scale.  The decal sheet includes stencils for one of six L-39 Albatros.  This decal sheet covers an Iraqi L-39 during Operation Desert Storm to a German L-39 to a Chech and Slovak "Tiger Meet" L-39 as well as a Egyptian L-39 and an Lithuanian L-39.  The painting options include everything from a 3 colour Olive Green and Sand Iraqi Desert Scheme from Desert Storm on this sheet to a Dark Green and Ochre paint scheme of the German L-39.  The quality of the sheet is good....excellent colours.....clear printing and completely in register although the stencil data for the 1/72 stencils are too small to be clearly printed and readable.  I recommend this sheet to anyone looking for interesting options to the kit decals.  Recommended kits are the 1/72 KP kit.

Decal option #1 is a L-39 ZA of the 1st Squadron, 11th wing, Czech and Slovak Air Force based at Zatec Airbase during "Tiger Meet 91" at RAF Fairford in July '91.  The paint scheme is Olive Green FS 24097, Ochre FS 23440 on the topside with some Yellow FS 13655 on the top of the tail.  The underside is Light Blue Grey FS 26375.  Markings include an Albatros bird picture on the sides of the engine intakes as well as a Tiger emblem on the side of the forward fuselage.

Decal option #2 is a L-59E (L-39 MS) Albatros of the Egyptian Air Force Academy in the Spring of 1993.  The paint scheme is Dark Green FS 24087 and Cream FS 23564 on the topside with some Yellow FS 13655 on the top of the tail and nose cone.  The underside is Light Blue Grey FS 26375.  Markings include an Albatros emblem that includes the Egyptian flag in the emblem on the sides of the fuselage by the cockpit as well as Arabic writing.

Decal option #3  is a L-39 ZO Albatros of the Iraqi Air Force Academy out of Tikrit Airbase in 1990-1991.  The paint scheme is Dark Green FS 24087, Sand FS 23448 on the topside with some Red FS 11140 on the nose cone and Yellow FS 13655 on the top of the tail and tips of the wings.  The underside is Light Blue Grey FS 26375.  Markings include some Arabic script on the side of the fuselage beside the cockpit as well as a very interesting Albatros Emblem that includes the Iraqi Flag in the design.

Decal option #4  is a L-39 C Albatros of the Lithuanian Air Force out of Panevejis Airbase in March 1993.  The paint scheme is Ochre FS 23440 and Dark Green FS 24087 on the topside with some Yellow FS 13655 on the top of the tail and nose cone and tips of the wings.  The underside is Light Blue Grey FS 26375.  One interesting item to note is the Soviet national insignias were over-painted in Dark Green FS 24079 and then the Lithuanian were painted onto the same place.

Decal option #5  is a L-39 ZO Albatros of the 25th Air Training Wing "Leander Ratz of the East German Air Force out of Bautzen Airbase in 1985.  The paint scheme is Ochre FS 23440 and Dark Green FS 24087 on the topside with some Yellow FS 13655 on the top of the tail and nose cone and tips of the wings.  The underside is Light Blue Grey FS 26375.

Decal option #6  is a L-39 ZO Albatros of the German Air Force out of Rothenburg Airbase in the Spring of 1991.  The paint scheme is Ochre FS 23440 and Dark Green FS 24087 on the topside with some Yellow FS 13655 on the top of the tail and nose cone and tips of the wings.  The underside is Light Blue Grey FS 26375.
