MiG-23 Flogger

#72015  1/72 scale Decal sheet

Review by Steve Bamford (ARC Staff)

This decal sheet comes in 1/72 scale.  The decal sheet includes stencils for one of five MiG-23's, plus markings for the 5 different MiG-23's.  This decal sheet covers the MiG-21 from various countries including Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, Israeli (captured Syrian MiG-23), Soviet (based in Vietnam), German and Polish.  The painting options include everything from Brown and Green Iraqi MiG-23 from Desert Storm on this sheet to a light Olive and Tan paint scheme of the German MiG-23.  One of the planes include some tail art of a Shark standing on it's tail.  The quality of the sheet is good....excellent colours.....clear printing and completely in register although the stencil data for the 1/72 stencils are too small to be clearly printed and readable.  I recommend this sheet to anyone looking for interesting options to the kit decals.  MiG-23 kit available in 1/72 include Academy, Airfix, Hasegawa and Heller.

Decal option #1 is a MiG-23 MLD Flogger K of the Soviet Air Force-based at Cam Ranh Bay Airbase, Vietnam in 1988.  The paint scheme is Dark Brown FS 30206 and Mid Green FS 34226 and Dark Green FS 34079 and Sand FS 33613 on the topside with some Randome Grey FS 36173 on the top of the tail.  The nose cone is Randome Grey FS 36173 and the underside is Light Blue FS 35622 and the fuel tanks are Aluminium.  Markings include a Shark standing on it's tail fins on the control surfaces of the vertical stabilizer.

Decal option #2 is a MiG-23 ML Flogger G of the Israeli Air Force in the spring of 1990.  This is an ex-Syrian aircraft, which flew to Israel in the hands of a defecting pilot on October 11, 1989.  The paint scheme is Dark Green FS 34079 and Sand FS 33613 and Earth Brown FS30219 on the topside with some Randome Grey FS 36173 on the top of the tail.  The nose cone is Randome Grey FS 36173 and the underside is Light Blue FS 35622.  Markings include the Syrian flag on the vertical stabilizer and the Israeli marking on the rest of the plane.

Decal option #4  is a MiG-23 MS Flogger E of the Iraqi Airforce in 1990-1991.  This version saw combat against Iranian Phantoms during the Iran-Iraq War.  The paint scheme is Dark Green FS 34079 and Sand FS 33613 and Earth Brown FS 30219 on the topside with some Randome Grey FS 36173 on the top of the tail.  The nose cone is Randome Grey FS 36173 and the underside is Light Blue FS 35622 and the fuel tanks are Dark Green FS 34079 and Sand FS 33613 and Earth Brown FS 30219 on the topside and Light Blue FS 35622 on the bottom side of the fuel tanks..
