Food Fight!

Silly Week 2015

In the early 1940's, North American Aviation came out with a version of the B-25 Mitchell bomber known as the PBJ-1 for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps use. When a person normally thinks of the letters PBJ, the first thought is usually "peanut butter & jelly". Giving new meaning to the term "food fight", I decided to create a humorous diorama to show that modeling can be FUN!

I started with a 1/72 scale Hasegawa PBJ B-25 Mitchell, then used Liquitex brand acrylic gels and paints to create the peanut butter and grape jelly. Boy, that wasn't easy. It was mostly trial and error. But I think I came darn close to getting the colors right. Almost looks good enough to eat, eh? White kitchen sponges were used for the bread pieces, and brown ribbon to simulate the crust. PropBlurs photoetch spinning props were used for the propeller effects. Dollhouse milk jugs were used to create bombs to show the B-25 on a "milk run". The B-25 is held aloft by a metal rod inside of a straw for support.

The enemy aircraft was created using chattering teeth found in a joke shop, then adding parts from a 1/72 Me-262 German jet aircraft fighter. Dollhouse kitchen utensils are hung under the wings to serve as weapons. The eyes and tongue came from a craft store. The yellow smiling face emblems are decals from a pinewood derby car.
